I am a contemporary painter living on the edge of the Peak District in England, although I originate from Fife in Scotland. I have a background in biological sciences and get all my inspiration from nature, both on a micro and macro level – big skies and hills and crags and the sea but also the tiny details of lichens and mosses.

 I’m also a keen forager and obsessed with mushrooms and mycelium. All of these make their way into my paintings, and I hope to capture some of the joy I feel when I’m outside rather than paint the precise details. I normally work from memory or from one of my hundreds of photos

. 

I like to build up many layers of paint so that the painting feels like it has a history, and I start most paintings with drawing in charcoal and water – often scribbling graffiti or messages or drawing a mycelial web. As the layers build up, I will scratch into them or scrape or rub off areas to reveal the past.
